A guide to the seven chakras

Do you ever fell off or unstable? Nothing is exceptionally wrong, yet you do not feel at ease.

Chakras are energy centers, each emitting a different energy that affects the mind, body, and soul wellbeing and connection. When they are working harmoniously, we feel whole, and on purpose.

There are seven main chakras that run from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, and all are connected to different organs and glands within the body. During times of stress and uncertainty our chakras become blocked, and in most cases, this can lead to mental, physical, and emotional challenges.

So, what exactly are the seven chakras and how do they affect us?

Root Chakra

The Muladhara, or root chakra, is located at the base of the spine and is the basis of survival, it keeps us grounded, centered, and defines our relationship with Mother Earth. When the root chakra is in balance you feel at ease with your future, you feel confident and stable. Such things as extreme trauma and life circumstances can cause this chakra to be unbalanced resulting in greed, and extreme material possession.

The root chakra is represented by the colour red which symbolises power, passion, courage, security, and physical and emotional survival. Our sense of smell within the body is connected to the root chakra and is also attached to the gland known as Gonads.

Sacral Chakra

The Swadhisthana, or sacral chakra, is associated with divine creativity, sexuality, joy, and flow, it is located around your naval and is symbolic of the water element within the human body. When the sacral chakra is in balance, there is a positive association with sex and proper reproductive functions. A good indication of a blocked sacral chakra is a low or overactive libido.

The sacral chakra is represented by the colour orange which symbolises confidence, joy, enthusiasm, emotional balance, sexuality, harmony, and compassion. The sacral is connected to our sense of taste and impacts several organs and glands including our bladder, lymphatic system, pelvis, large intestine, and female reproductive organs.

Solar Plexus Chakra

The Manipura, or solar plexus chakra, is associated with our wisdom, emotions, and expansion and contraction of breath, it represents our personal abilities and powers. When the solar plexus is in balance, there is positive self-worth, self-respect, and a feeling of living in your purpose. When this chakra is blocked, there is a ton of judgement, resentment and complaining present.

The solar plexus is represented by the colour yellow which symbolises personal power, abundance, courage, and self-confidence. This chakra is connected to the sense of light and the adrenal glands.

Heart Chakra

The Anahata, or heart chakra, is responsible for regulating all our emotions, it is associated with the element of air within the body and has profound influence on our professional and personal relationships. When this chakra is in balance, there is a ton of love, kindness, and empathy for oneself and others. When there are negative emotions within relationship, generally this can be a good indication of a blocked heart chakra.

The heart chakra is represented by the colour green which symbolises forgiveness, growth, nature, unconditional love, and balance. Our sense of touch is connected to our heart chakra, as well as several glands, including the lymph and thymus glands.

Throat Chakra

The Vishuddhi, or throat chakra represents your ability to communicate, to listen, to empathize and to speak up authentically. This element is extremely delicate and graceful, when it is in balance there is a strong artistic and creative ability, and a freedom to live authentically with a heightened sense of spiritual awareness. When the throat chakra is blocked there tends to be secrets, silence, or violence present.

The throat chakra is represented by the colour blue which symbolises stability, honesty, truth, and tranquility. This chakra is connected to several organs and glans, including the throat, jaw, neck, vertebrae, thyroid, teeth, ears, oesophagus, and ears.

Third Eye Chakra

The Ajna, or third eye chakra is associated with inner wisdom, intuition, sense of thought, ability to rationalise and use logic and is also known as the centre of knowledge. When the third eye is in balance there is connection to your highest self, there is no fear of death or troubles, and there are charming and charismatic traits present. When someone is experiencing self-doubt, fear, and depression, generally this is an indication of a blockage with the third eye chakra.

The third eye chakra is represented by the colour indigo which symbolises spirituality, wisdom, devotion, creativity, and fairness. This chakra is connected to the pituitary and pineal gland.

Crown Chakra

The Sahasrara, or crown chakra is an individual’s center of spirit or spirituality and is associated with the element of light, meaning to enlighten beings. When the crown chakra is in balance, there is an experience of extreme spiritual connection with oneself and others, powerful abilities and potentials, and the ability to create miracles. When the crown chakra is blocked there tends to be feelings of isolation and aloneness present.

The crown chakra is represented by the colour violet which symbolises power, leadership, wealth, passion, respect, and spiritual goals. This chakra is connected to the brain, hand, nervous system, pituitary gland, and several others.
